I designed this bed for my 2 yr old son, based on some ideas I'd seen online.
Using SketchUp, I drew the basic curve of the headboard, and turned that into a component, which I then copied and rotated and re-used in the footboard and nose-cone. I copied each of the components used in the model to create a cut-sheet, which allowed me to determine the most efficient way to get the various shapes out of 4x8 sheets of plywood.
I made extensive use of layers within the SketchUp model for things like the cut-sheet, dimensions, guides etc.
To build the project, I used a video projector and my laptop to project the cut-sheet drawing onto a 4x8 sheet of hardboard in order to make templates.
The bed was built out of 3/4" Baltic Birch plywood (double thickness on the headboard, footboard/nose-cone, and the wings.
