Platform Beds in General

Does anyone here own a platform bed and what are your experiences with it? The reason I ask is because when I look at the drawing of the bed Marc is working on, my first thought is that I am going to need shin guards to get in and out of it. It just seems like that wooden "lip" (for lack of a better term) sticking out past the mattress would be uncomfortable if you're trying to sit on the edge of the bed, and could get in the way when your climbing in/out. The other question is do you not use a box spring with the platform bed? Does it take a special kind of mattress?

Having said all that, let me just add that I don't mean to come across as critical of Marc's design and/or the client's taste in beds. Based on the pictures he's posted so far the bed and especially the headboard are beautiful. I'm just kind of curious about people's experience with them in everyday use.

I have decided to build this project. I am in the process of gathering a few things, tools etc. that i don't currently have. Mainly more clamps. Does anyone know how many board feet are in the queen size Dogon bed?

Thanks,

Breakdown question

I only have a bed with the metal frame on wheels that can be broken down into 2 long pieces. So essentially I have those two pieces, the headboard and the two matress parts if I ever want to move.

What is the dogon bed like? Is it designed to be broken down? and how many pieces? Kinda interested in the build but not sure how to get it out of the workshop and to the bedroom up a kinda narrow flight of stairs.

thanks

Rail to Foot board connection

I don't know where this was discussed, but I was thinking about this joint and think a dry large mortise and tenon and a "bench bolt" type connection in where the nut would be buried in the foot board lamination and bolt or bolts housed in dado, then a strip glued in to hold bolt in place on underside or rail. Or my other thought is to use a pair of handrail bolt connectors called a "Zip Bolt" with the dry fit tenon with the bolt part in foot board and "Zip" part in the side rail. What do you all think?
