I guess I need a router table.

I've been putting off getting a router table because space is limited for me. I did make a small rolling worktable that holds my midi-lathe and grinder and I cut a space below the lathe to keep chips from piling up near the motor intake. One thought would be to put a router plate in that space. I could pull the plate when doing lathe work and pull the lathe and grinder off when doing router work. I'd still need a fence but maybe something simple clamped to the top of the table would work.

The other thing I'm curious about is using a dovetail plane like the one linked below; it would take up a lot less space and I like working with hand planes Does anyone have experience or input on these?

http://www.leevalley.com/US/Wood/page.aspx?p=55597&cat=1,41182

I'd still have to figure out how to get the slots in the post to work with the planed legs.

Thanks,

Chuckc

Die Grinders

I'll be doing the sculpted version of this table since I don't have a lathe. I have a pneumatic die grinder, but my compressor has issues keeping up, it's a bit underpowered, and man I'm so sick of listening to that compressor scream at me. So I need an electric one.

I didn't realize they were so expensive...you can get a pretty good angle grinder for about 75 bucks. The cheapest die grinder I could find that isn't an obvious piece of crap is this Makita for $107:

http://www.amazon.com/Makita-GD0601-4-Inch-Die-Grinder/dp/B001ASC73E/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1366574385&sr=8-1&keywords=makita+die+grinder

But it looks HUGE. I'd like something way smaller to do more detailed carving work...but still not spend a fortune.

There's also this one that has more power and variable speed...can't really tell if it's smaller...$215

http://www.amazon.com/Makita-GD0800C-4-Inch-Die-Grinder/dp/B000056NOU/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1366574653&sr=8-2&keywords=makita+die+grinder

Anyone have any advice on a decent, smaller grinder that doesn't break the bank? I went into my search thinking I'd be spending less than $100. Guess I could push my budget to around $200 if I had to. But I won't like it.

I probably should have put this in the power tool forum...

Guild Live Session

Hey Marc,

Just watched the recorded live session on the Youtube link from the Guild site. At the start of the video it was a little choppy even at 320 but I bumped it up to 720 HD and it was clearer but still a little choppy. As it went through it got better though.

By the end it was higher quality but still not as good as your own videos. I suppose it must be a limitation of YouTube.

I enjoyed the entire session and it was very informative but couldn't make it live this time as it was about 2AM to 3AM in the morning here in the UK. Glad you were able to get it recorded and up so quick. The finished table you showed looked great.

Looking forward to the Krenov piece. That sounds awesome

Options that didn't make the cut

Marc and I went through a lot of different design options for the Tilt Top Table while we were making the plans. You've probably seen the final two options we published, which are quite different. Marc put up a poll to see which one the community prefers, at this link:

http://www.thewoodwhisperer.com/articles/which-table-design-do-you-prefer/

Some of the early comments are suggesting to mix the column from Option 1, with the legs from Option 2. Well, we looked at that combination and I happen to have the file right here.

Another one of my favorite options was the "I don't have a lathe or any way to round a column" version. This would just be roughed out on the bandsaw and then smoothed. You'd need four feet, one for each corner - but they are the same exact feet and the same router jig could be used to make the dovetail slots.

Like I said, we looked at a LOT of options. Spiral columns, different shapes for the top, weird spiral feet, and even a carved "split foot" that takes the table in a whole new directions.

Take a peek. Comments always welcome. Better yet, show us your ideas!

From above, Xray mode on.
