Wall Hanging Cabinet (sort of)

Made some shop cabinets that are based on this guild build. Since this is my first woodworking project my goal was #1 to learn some woodworking skills and a distant 2nd to get some cabinets. Virtually everything was a first time to me, from milling to finishing. Even made some jigs along the way including a cross cut sled (my favorite tool). All possible using Marc's guild videos plus the huge amount of advice I got on this forum, thanks everyone!

Used cheap construction lumber (once again, this was a practice project), the wood is presumed to be spruce (called white wood at the store), the ply for the doors is birch. Finished with 4 coats of matte water base poly (sprayed). Used butt hinges instead of knife.

I also made 4 of the pocket screw versions, because at the end of the day, I did need some cabinets. Three of them got euro hinges, the last one you see without a door I plan to make something special for doors with some additional tool storage, similar to the hanging tool cabinet Marc built.

Now I need to get ahold of some hardwood and do some woodworking for real-sies. :-).

Next on the list is a mission coffee table.

How much load can a softwood French Cleat take?

I'm making some super sized versions of the wall hanging cabinet for garage storage and joinery practice. They are made of some sort of soft wood (sold as "white wood" at lowes), and I am guessing once mounted to the wall will need to be capable of a working load of about 130lbs (the size is capable of carrying about 12 1gal paint cans). I plan on using a French cleat system to span the entire width of the cabinets (about 35").

Question is will I be fine using the softwood to make the cleat? Seams like the weakness will be in 45degree cut, but I think all the force is going straight down so that 45 shouldn't be too stressed. Love to get some second opinions.

Thanks!

I finished my cabinet, way late!

I recently put the finishing touches on my Wall-Hanging Cabinet that I built for my wife. I went with curly cherry for the case and ambrosia maple for the accents. I went with the through-dovetails on the case joinery, but covered up my hard work with molding because the wife says "dovetail joints are ugly." Gotta be the first time I've heard anyone say that!

I have to say I'm very dissapointed in my ability (or lack thereof) to finish curly cherry. The end product just looks sorta blotchy rather than curly, as I was afraid it would. I used the outdoor oil that Marc used in the Guild build, but I didn't use any blotch control because I knew it would conceal the curl of hte wood. Oh well, maybe next time.

Speaking of next time, you may notice in the background of these pictures some familiar-looking 4" slabs! Working on the Roubo build now, as well.

Wood thickness

Hey all,

Rookie question for y'all so forgive me if this sounds too ignorant.

Can I build this cabinet out of 1/2 cedar? I don't know if that's too thin given that this will be hanging on the wall. That being said, it'll just be hanging over the pot in the bathroom so it won't be loaded with tools or anything like that.

I've got a bunch of 1/2 cedar waiting for a project that I would like to use before I upgrade to the expensive woods and while I can get my practice in. Thoughts?

What would you charge?

This question is directed more to those that are pro's at this stuff .

As with alot of my thoughts on this projects, I was wondering if someone came to you and said they wanted a custom built wall hanging cabinet, what would you charge for it? Assume that it is made from Cherry and your materiel cost are in that $150-200 range and the size is the same as the one built in the guild.

I was figuring that about $600-700 would be a reasonable price. Maybe $800-1000 when you get into fancier woods. What do you guys think?

I know that everyone's pricing is different and everyone has their own math to come to the total, so speaking in general, is $600 crazy cheap and $1000 be the low end for custom work? Just wanted to know people thoughts on this

Thanks!

Completed Wall Hanging Cabinet

This is my version of the winter's guild build wall hanging cabinet. I decided to keep the same dimensions but rotate it 90 deg which fits our bathroom a little better.

I went with walnut for the the main construction along with walnut veneer ply for the doors and stained ply for the back. I used a leigh jig to cut the dovetails for both the case and drawers. The finish was 3 coats of a satin wiping varnish.

The cabinet has been in our bathroom for about a month now and one of the drawers has swelled to the point where it can't be pushed in all the way... time to get the block plane out!!

Like most projects, there are always surprises, and this one was no exception. I purchased some nice figured veneer for the doors, but it was extremely waving. In my first attempt ever to flatten very waving veneer I used a recipe I found online that uses some glue. Clamped it all up, but I forgot the step to add some mesh in between the paper and veneer. You can guess what happened... I had nice paper veneer with a walnut core! Plan B ended up purchasing flatter veneer.

Finally had a chance to make an early morning (pre-work) run for lumber this morning. Met the Amish guys at Yoder Lumber as they came in for work at 6am this morning. Found some great Cherry boards.

2 of them are about 10.5" wide and one is about 8.5". Trying to decide if I'll stick to the plan dimensions and see if I can get my rails and stiles out of the body off-cuts, or if I'll just add about 2" of depth.

Plywood WHC

So i've finally started the WHC. I had planned to build along in real time, but wasn't able to. I'm going with the Plywood version, mainly because i've not really used plywood for any "real" projects before. I'm using mahogany plywood, I had wanted to go walnut by my wood store was out and he gave me a great deal on the mahogany.

This will be living in a bathroom which really doesn't get much use. We have a bathroom in our basement which has a shower but in the year we've lived here it's never been used, so i'm not concerned with mold and moisture. We don't have much room for hand towels or TP storage, so this will come in very handy.so I'm thinking of going with BLO or just a wipe on poly. Any suggestions as to which i should use?
I've completed the case construction and am just about to start prefinishing. I was really tempted to complete the build and then finish, but reading Marc's book has given me (at least temporarily:) enough patience to look at the finish as part of the buiding process, rather than something i need to rush through at the end.
