Mike's Chest of Drawers

Well, winter is almost here and now I'm well into the summer build. This is my take. Chest on chest. Solid cherry (including the back). Platform base. Have not started the drawers. Unfortunately, I've got to stop for Christmas presents. Marc's videos are constant reference and though they don't even look like cousins, the build concept is similar. Because I had to use some new stuff with the old cherry (and a little sapwood) I've decided to dye the piece. Will use General Vintage Cherry Dye. Have run several test pieces and the dye does well over Charles Neils Bloth Control.

Using the Domino for mortises

I am going to build a variation of the COD but am going to start with some nightstands before I tackle a dresser. I want to use the Domino for the M & T joinery but not sure it will work with the grooves in the legs for the panels. Do I need to make a stopped groove instead of having it run the length of the leg? I know that Marc used haunched tenons for part of the joinery. I think I can do something similair using different sized domino stock, has any one ever tried this?

Thanks in advance!

Armoire Based on Chest of Drawers

I plan to create an armoire that is based on the chest of drawers design. I would appreciate any feedback the community would be willing to provide - my apologies if this is out of the norms of the group - I wasn't quite sure if this was acceptable to the community.

I'm specifically looking for suggestions on hinges. I wanted the doors to be flush and inset. I've never done this type of door before so am curious about hinges. Based on research knife hinges seem to be the way to go but I don't know how those would work at the top since the profile is curved. Any other options?

I've attached my Sketchup file. Thanks for considering my request.

Chest-U-Lator

I originally posted this on the old Guild Forum, and finally realized that it hadn't made the move. This excel tool will help you to resize your Chest of Drawers if you want to deviate from the published plans.

Link: http://thewoodwhisperer.com/files/chest-u-lator-v2.xls

Options include:
- Equal height drawers, or drawer heights based on a standard increment like Marc used. Manual input also available.
- Overall case dimensions can be changed
- Up to 10 levels of drawers can be used, and the top 5 levels can be split into 2 drawers like Marc did.

Technical note: This spreadsheet uses a macro to redraw the simple diagram included. Excel macros are not supported by Google Docs, or by MS Office on the Mac. You can still use the spreadsheet to calculate part sizes, you just won't be able to redraw unless you have Excel. Also, you must enable the macro. I wrote it myself and personally guarantee that it is harmless.

The current dimensions in the file match the recent Guild Build Chest of Drawers. The attached images show a few samples of what can be done using the tool.

Be sure to check out the instructions on the first tab, and let me know if you have a question.

Extra wide COD

I am planning to start the construction of an shaker extra wide chest of drawers. I will be adding 12" to the overall width, and not to be confused with a double wide COD.

With the extra width, will any changes be required?

I am anticipating needing an extra drawer guilde and an additional divider in the back to support the web frames.

Any thoughts?

I have decided to build a chest of drawers awhile ago and now I am getting back to it. I have made my side panels of solid wood versus the plywood. So the question is where should I appy my glue on the webframes? Just on the front web where the legs meet or just the back or both front & back? And what about glue on center support?

I started the Chest project in May 2010 and finished about a month ago (do the math, 8 months). The design is different than the Guild project but more useful for my home. I did learn how to hand cut dovetails since there are 96 of the little suckers. It's built out of cherry and poplar. Finished with shellac, varnish, and wax. It was a great skill building and enjoyable experience. Thanks Marc for the inspiration and all of your how-to videos.

Hello all fellow woodworkers. Well I have been finally able to get out into my shop. The heat and humidity has left us for now so I went back to work on the summer Guild Build. After milling some White Oak for the legs and cutting all the M & T's, AKA,PITAS, I was able to set the side panels into place and get both sides glued up. Today I was out there working on the back Styles and Rails. Man I'll tell you all something. Be prepared to do allot of dry fitting and cutting on this one. After five or so hours I finally got the back all dry fitted and to my surprise it all fit. Not bad for a guy with very little vision in both eyes. I have posted some pictures of the unit sitting on my assembly table standing up. It is not glued up yet but the sides are. I will probably be back into the shop tomorrow to do the drawer frames. I'm still figuring out how I'm going to assemble this step. Should I Glue the frames all up then try to fit them in or assemble as I insert the pieces. Let me know how you people are planning this step. Hope you like what you see, Cause I sure do. Have fun and remember, "Keep Making That Sawdust". Lance,,,aka" Charger"

Dovetail Rabbets

While watching the last guild build the drawer joints made me think of where I had seen these before. I couldn't really place it so I pulled a few books and was going to look through them. Before I got through all of them I went on vacation to Maine and Boston. While in Boston I got a chance to tour the USS Constitution built 1794 to 1797. I was walking between the decks when I looked down at the joinery around a hatch and discovered this.

Low and behold it was the dovetailed rabbet joint that Marc used on his drawers. Granted it was in a more frame and panel type construction, but it was still there. I was floored having expected this joint to have come around in the late 19th century and here it was about 100 years early then I expected. Way to include some period details in the modern style chest of drawers.

Double-wide chest of drawers

I believe I have finally convinced my wife that we need a chest of drawers...so I am starting to get things in order to build along (albeit a bit late starting).

The catch here is that she really wants a slightly lower cabinet that is double wide. This will be a big hall table/chest for things like hats and gloves and so on.

I'm starting to draw up what I plan to build using the chest of drawers as the base, reusing all of the construction techniques/etc. This brings me to my first issue.

Given that this will be double the width, I'm debating how to handle the case structure in the center (between the drawers).
1 - one option is to just build a center frame that mimicks the side frames and treat the left and right halves of the chest as two cabinets.
2 - another option would be to reinforce the webframes and make them twice as wide, but I'm not sure that it won't end up sagging in the middle without some extra support (ie, a middle foot of some kind).

Option 1 is probably the easiest approach...but option 2 would allow me to have a nice continuous chest front that looks like a single chest rather than two.

Anyone have thoughts on how best to handle this?

I decided to play with some handle options for the chest of drawers today. Here's one what was "interesting" to make. Just a prototype right now and still considering my options.

Help Me Select a Finish

Hey Guildies. I am undecided on the finish for the chest of drawers, so I will let you guys decide. The choices are based on availability and what I have reasonable access to, as well as what I am personally willing to apply. Some pieces I like to experiment on, but this isn't one of them. Let me know what you think.

Here are some links to each product to help you make a decision:

Enduro-Var
Arm-R-Seal
Sherwin William Pre-Cat Lacquer

Build Update

Just thought you guys might like to see where the project is in real time. Obviously I need to be a little ahead of the videos. The sides are glued up as sub-assemblies and the divider supports are installed. I attached the back and front rails in a dry assembly and the next step is to create the web frames, notch the corners, and then the case can be glued up. Moving right along.
