Colorado Brian
Since there is so many Festool questions today... What would you buy the Domino or the Domino XL?
JerrySats
I think it depends on the work you do , I have the 500 and use it a lot . Right now I don't build much that requires such big dominos .
markhochstein
Well, I just bought the 700. The XL can take an 8mm bit (comes with a 12mm bit). 8mm is almost exactly 5/16". So, that would be about the maximum for work in 3/4" material. I tried it in 3/4" and it worked great. If you do work in thinner than 3/4" sock then you'll probably want the 500. The 700 has a longer stroke - deeper mortises and can accomodate much larger bits for larger mortises. It ultimately depends on what you make. For a "normal" home woodworking hobbyist they both overlap, so the question becomes, what direction do you see yourself moving in that you would want to use the Domino with? Bigger - making chairs and maybe outdoor projects, smaller - making boxes and drawers using smaller M&T's. If the 700 went down to 6mm it would be ano-brainer, but it doesn't so you have a choice to make.
Dyami Plotke
I agree with Mark. I happen to own both. So far, I use the 500 more, but I plan to start building more tables & chairs, so I anticipate that the 700 will get lots of future use. wdwerker
I think the guys that make the Domiplate are going to be making smaller bits for the XL as well as other accessories. I think a larger Domiplate is in the works too.
