aerofly0610
Hello fellow wood workers, I have some beautiful hand planes. One was my great great grandpa's, given to me by my father. I'm thinking its a Stanley #3 or #4. The other is a Stanley #5 that I got at a rummage sale for $15. I want to restore them so they look real nice. My plans thus far,,,, clean up the rust (might try electrolysis), lap the sole and body, sand the old finish off the wood parts and refinish, grind/hone blades. Label of Great Great Grandpa's plane Can anyone confirm the little guy and give some tips on restoring them to their glory?? Thanks!!! mkirby
Have a read of this which details the process a few people use. If you want to return them to factory new then check the link in my post in that thread.
wilburpan
Stanley #3's are about 8" long and 1-3/4" wide. A #4 is about 9" long, and a #5 is about 14" long. Both the #4 and #5 are 2" wide. Based on the relative size of your planes in the picture, it looks like you have a #3. But take a ruler to it and see.
