nikbrown
I meant to start this thread earlier but never got around to it. I'm building out of cherry because I like how it ages naturally and I already have a few other G&G pieces that I've done with it. I'm leaving my stock as thick as I can so most of it comes in around 7/8'ish The base and breadboards are about 1 1/4". I built the finger joints in my glue up. The other changes I'm making are I'm going with more of a finger joint base like Darrell's, and I'll go ahead and do the ebony splines that bridge the top and the breadboards (mostly because I already have all the jigs built to batch them out). So this is how far I've gotten so far.

bgreenb
Coming along nicely dude! Woodworking gets a little trickier as a daddy doesn't it? You can say that again. I can't wait until my daughter (15 months) is old enough to come hang out with me in the shop (yeah, I'll be waiting a while...) Nik - your blanket chest looks awesome! nikbrown
Coming along nicely dude! Woodworking gets a little trickier as a daddy doesn't it? Yea my shop is a disaster... no time to clean when I barely have time to build!

Thanks... yea my daughter is only 4.5 months old now. only time she is in the shop is strapped to me and she doesn't have enough patience for more than 10 min of daddy doing layout work. nikbrown
A bit more progress this morning. Chopped out the ends of the breadboards... and milled up some of the ebony.
ChetlovesMer
That looks great, Nik. Especially like that middle picture. But check me if I'm wrong here, that's not a blanket in that chest? My son is 3 now and he is just starting to take an interest in "Daddy's Shop". We have special rules in Daddy's shop, so now he's proclaimed a corner of our basement as "His Shop" and he has special rules for people who go into his shop too.

pghmyn
I'm not a fan of the Greene and Greene style for the most part. However, I like how your piece looks with the large "pins" for the joints.
nikbrown
Milled 7 blanks before I had 2 that would work for the handles of my chest. Cracks throughout one of my 8/4 boards Got the handles done today. All finished and ready for coats of finish.

mmonday
It looks great, Nik! How do you plan to finish?
nikbrown
It looks great, Nik! How do you plan to finish? I'll do my normal cherry finish... a coat of amber shellac just to prevent blotching and add a bit of warmth, then GF satin arm-r-seal. (I don't like staining wood). I like to let the cherry color age naturally.
Bobby Slack
That is one sweet chest. One of my friends left some cherry raw on the sun and got an amazing deep color really quick. Then he finished with Waterlox. I wonder if this would be a good way of finishing anything in cherry.
nikbrown
Finished up the Chest / Playpen (other than putting on the hinges). Looks like it may end up as a temporary coffee table until I can get around to that project. Looks a little orange right now... but the cherry should age and mellow over the next year and look really nice.
bgreenb
Wow. Beautiful. I love the natural look of cherry. I made a hall table in cherry and used that same finish schedule. A year later it looks gorgeous. Nice work!
chexxchexx
Late to the party by more than a year, but thought I'd comment, anyway. Beautiful result and great pictures. Starting this build today now that my Roubo is 98% finished. Hoping for a result like yours.
