How to Clean & Protect Antique Walnut (?) Dresser

I believe this dresser is walnut. I don't know finishes, but my guess on this is shellac. It's very close-to-the-wood. Overall, the finish is in good shape. This dresser sits with one side to a window. That window side and lower front have been lightened by the sun. The upper front is lightened, but not as much. There is a darker area near the base. I can't tell if it's dirt. It doesn't rub off with my finger.

* I'd like to give this a gentle cleaning (also see if that lower darkening is dirt) - what should I use?

* I will not be refinishing this piece, but I'd like to give it some support. Is there something I can do to help the lightened wood?

Thanks for any help.
