Tpt life
A mask should fit in the oven. If you aren't worried about case hardening, I'd try getting it wet then forcing it dry a little faster than wise. It might be wise to try it with a scrap first. Llama
Not sure if this is possibleGet a piece nice and wet, and freeze it. Seems like it should crack?

Eric.
I would assume baking soda would be the first choice for making wood crack. Just mix it up and cook it for a while. The first one is free.

Tpt life
A watched pot.... When baking, how fast does a crack develop? Can you monitor and remove at the point you get checking? Can you only wet one area to get the crack where you want it? How about a heat gun instead? Are you Edison? How many failures are you willing to try? Llama
Crack? Plumbers crack? Or ghetto crack?
duckkisser
My head hurts from this post.....I don't realy want to carve the mask several times so I don't think I want to be like Edison. I think ill gray it but hand carve the tiny little splits and checks on the outside.

duckkisser
Doesn't baking soda just turn it grey like ebonizing solution? Won't crack it.
Eric.
Definitely test this out first...but I'd try laying a soaking wet cloth, kind of rolled up into a worm shape, on the area you want to crack. Let it soak for a few hours. Then put it under a heat lamp. If that doesn't work, I have no other ideas. I spend all of my time trying to figure out how to make wood NOT crack. wtnhighlander
I'd go with Eric's wet cloth suggestion. Put it in the fridge while the water is soaking in, then dry it in hot sun or under a heat lamp to get thermal shock along with fast demoisturization. If that doesn't do it, use a hammer.Excuse me...MALLET.
Tkf530
Make the finish crack instead of changing he actually integrity of work piece. Depending on your finish there's lacquer based "crackle lacquer" and then there's hide glue which is compatible with most finishes. Or chisel from the endgrain slowly downwards. Janello
I'll crack that sucka..I'll hit it with a hammer and striking chisel. If that don't work, I'll bring it to a karate tournament. And if all else fails, lay it on the train tracks.
