Heavydc2
I am looking for thoughts on this finish and wondering if there is something that I could do to make it look better.
wtnhighlander
What is that, walnut and maple? Looks like no finish at all to me. What sort of "better" are you shooting for?
..Kev
What species of woods and what's already on it?
Countryside Workshop
Is this a cutting board?
Heavydc2
lol, I realized after the fact that I should have said more, I am new to this Its Cherry, Reclaimed Redwood, and Oak, the top right of the picture has a cut off that I put some of the walnut oil/beeswax/turpentine that I put on to test. Its going to end up being the most time consuming raised dog bowl platform ever created, the way I see it I am new to this hobby and if I am going to make some cool stuff I need practice. wtnhighlander
A dog bowl platform is likely to stay wet a lot. I would suggest several coats of "simple wiping varnish" ala the Wood Whisperer himself. An oil/wax finish is going to need a lot of refreshing. Heavydc2
So I am finally getting close to finishing, I have tested a little on the underside, one oil/wax, one wiping varnish, one tru oil and one oil/wax with varnish over the top. Here are the results, any thoughts or suggestions All 4 Tru oil Oil/wax Oil wax varnish Varnish
wdwerker
Visually I like the look of the oil wax varnish .
wtnhighlander
I've always like true-oil on wood firearm furniture. Never tried it on home furnishings, though.
Heavydc2
I am confused/don't spend enough time researching, but is there an appropriate method to doing the oil/wax for a few coats, then varnishing over the top?
wtnhighlander
A pro may have a more definitive answer, but the 'wax' part of your oil/wax finish leads me to think a varnish would not adhere properly. You MAY be able to swing it by applying a barrier coat of shellac between the oil/wax and varnish.
Heavydc2
Or maybe reduce the wax content/remove it then varnish
Rick Mosher
It may be a little expensive for what you're making but an epoxy glass finish would work great on this and be a real learning experience for a later project. Boat builders use epoxy resin with fiberglass matt sanded flat and then topcoated with varnish. Here is a link to the process if you're interested. Using the polyester film works incredibly well by the way.
Heavydc2
Here is the finished product. I ended up doing one coat of my wax/oil mix then 4 coats of a wipe on varnish
