benbo
Hi, I have made a solid oak sea chest with a heavy arched lid. As you can imagine the hinges will need to be quite powerful to hold it. What type of hinge would be the best for the job? Is there a hinge I can get that will only turn 90 degrees so that I don't have to install a lid stay? Thanks, Benbo! TerryMcK
Hi Benbo. How big is the chest (dimensions) and thickness of the lid too?

Coop
Benbo, We used the Lid Stay Torsion Hinges from Rockler on Marc's Blanket Chest Build. It is roughly 43" x 24" w/ a 1" thick top. I used 4 of these hinges which was a little overkill. Three would have been sufficient.
TerryMcK
Yes I agree with K torsion hinges may be a good choice. Here are some available in the UK http://www.rutlands.co.uk/sp+hardware-general-cabinetware-lid-stay-torsion-hinges-satin-nickel-40lb-pair+46591 not cheap but I think its worthwhile spending on items like this. You would need to cut housings as they are meant for 19mm (3/4" thickness) though.
benbo
Yeah, they look good. I saw something like that before but I could not remember the name. Thanks guys. Another problem now, I can't find them in black iron to match the rest of the furniture on the box.
