Lacquer?

My typical topcoat is general high performance poly. I spray with an earlex, and I like the results I usually achieve.

I am tempted to try lacquer, mainly from the projects I have seen Marc use it on. It looks great, and I like the idea of one coat "burning" into the next.

So, where do I start? Is water based lacquer good? Or only solvent based? Which brands do you guys use? Any advice for a newbie to lacquer (besides where a good respirator)?

water base does not burn in, it is a completely different animal.  Lacquer in that context is just a marketing term.

My Earlex 5500 just arrived, I am going to start with nitro lacquer and CAB acrylic and then go from there.  Nitro is a little more durable but yellows slightly, cab acrylic is meant to be "water white" or basically crystal clear.

Sherwin Williams has a nice table comparing their clear finishes.

Also, Marc answered a question on this topic a while back.
