jmoorecraftworks
Okay guys how many planes do you own? What number is hoarding? Is it okay to have duplicates of the same type of plane? Does every shop need that plane or two that sit in the window sill or shelf just for show? I'm curious to hear what all of you have to say!
Tpt life
If you collect, the sky is the limit. If you use, redundancy can allow for multiple setup options. Trust your conscience to tell you when to sell and don't worry about somebody else's workflow. That should not dictate your experience.

Llama
I have all I need. I want more. On second thought, I won't be happy until I have them all.
Eric.
There's no such thing as too many as long as they all have a purpose and you use them. As soon as they start sitting idle, it's time to rethink why you own them. Example: if I owned a Stanley 45, I'd have too many planes.
TerryMcK
Hmm I do have 3 #4s in my small home shop so I guess I do hoard them.
Tom King
Does this include all types including molding planes? If so, the answer is a LOT. I do use them though. None of mine are sitting out. All are in waterproof toolboxes, well marked though.

wtnhighlander
Planes are almost like clamps. You can never REALLY have too many.
Popular Post jhl.verona
A benchful is enough. But I may make a bigger bench. John

TerryMcK
Bench full? I agree! You've got a lot of space on that bench Mel. I think you need more planes
mkirby
I think the formula for calculating the optimum number of bikes to own can be applied equally to planes where N = N+1.
el capitán
You've got a lot of space on that bench Mel. I think you need more planes I think the big gaping holes under the bench need some drawers. Back on topic just get 2 of them all then you know you have what you need and a backup for emergencies.

I don't believe there's much doubt that tool redundancy is a recent phenomenon. Your woodworking will get better when you unload some of the overhead. Learn all the nuances you can learn about each tool in a sane, manageable kit of tools.

Give her some more money and the keys to the car, and tell her you need a plane........
