mnmachinist
I need some help deciding on a product to finish out a handle I made for a magnifying glass. The wood is oak and the ends are bronze. I applied a walnut stain, and want to know what is next to protect the wood and get a glossy sheen. I was thinking tung or linseed oil, with a clear poly? I don't know anything about it and just need some direction. I have attached a pic of the handle. Any help is appreciated! mnmachinist
OK thanks mike! I was thinking about the oil because I know that people use it on gun stocks. Is that generally applied when no stain is used? Sent from my Z750C using Tapatalk

wtnhighlander
The 'gunstock oil' I have used in the past was a oil/varnish mix of some sort. It would be perfectly acceptible for this application, but so is poly.
Sawz64
I agree with going straight to a wipe on poly. The third reason woodworkers use oil finish is habit. They have used it for years, and/or were trained that way. The new wipe on poly finishes give a warm, durable finish.
