Jim DaddyO
I am doing more and more hand work. I decided it was time to make something that required a lot of accuracy. I needed (wanted) a couple of try squares. I started with a piece of walnut that I rescued from the firewood pile and I have a really neat thin piece of maple that a guy gave me that was supposed to be for a guitar fret board. A bit of a challenge in that the blade stock had a radius in the face and it was a bear to flatten. Very dry and very hard wood. It was also thinner than my thinnest chisel. I messed up the bridle joint a bit on the larger one that I made first, so I added a decorative overlay of ash. The smaller one I did better on. Everything was done with hand tools. The finish is just a few coats of super blonde shellac padded on quickly. Both the top and bottom of the blades register true with the "flip test". The large one has about a 9" blade and the small one is 4".
