BuilderBill
6-3/4" x 20-3/4" plane Just got one of these for my timber framing crew and decided to try it out on some 4x10 walnut that's been drying out back: Two passes on a 10" board and the result: I LIKE this plane!!! Now I'm thinking of checking out the 12" version....
Beechwood Chip
I just ran across this video on the Festool planer. I didn't know Festool had a planer!
BuilderBill
Festool had two planers, both relatively wussies. I guess the HL 850 at 3-15/16" width would be OK for trim work but it costs more than the 6-3/4" Makita and the old P-C Porta-Plane beats it's pants off when it comes to setting doors. The EHL 65(now discontinued) sold for $395 and didn't really offer anything you couldn't get at the big box store for $100 except the Festool name and a Systainer. I have a lot of Festool gear but the cost/benefit ratio can get out of hand if you don't pay attention. Best, Bill
Coop
4" x 10" Walnut! Wow, that would be a second mortgage here in Houston
Tom King
Do they still come in a wooden box? I have one that I remember using once on a bunch of treated 8x8's that went on a house with a big porch that wrapped all the way around it. I didn't like the tracks left, so I ended up doing them by walking them with a flooring drum sander.
BuilderBill
4" x 10" Walnut! Wow, that would be a second mortgage here in Houston Not if you buy it green from a sawmill that ships several dozen tractor-trailer loads of pine daily. Cost me $38.00 if I remember, stray log that came in and got sawn because they occasionally get someone looking for a mantle. Right place at the right time, haven't seen one there since.
