Popular Post wdwerker
Apparently it cost $60 million to set up a new cooperage. They built the plant in Alabama. Starting production is 400 barrels a day. They will use staves from a Tennessee supplier. The town had just lost a big paper company so the new jobs were welcome. The article also mentioned that before Prohibition Tenn. went dry and the distillery was relocated in Alabama until they went dry as well.

wdwerker
400 barrels a day is gonna mean close to 6 million board feet of white oak a year! And I didn't allow for waste.
RichardA
A lot of oak, and they only use the barrels one time each!
wdwerker
I think they sell the used ones to other distillers for things like Scotch and spirits that don't need the strong color and flavor that a new charred barrel imparts. I bought a couple of used Jack Daniels barrels years ago to build a bar out of and all of the ones I could choose from had a cracked stave or 2. wtnhighlander
Didn't happen to notice the name of the Tennessee stave supplier, did you? I live only a short way from a large miller of white oak barrel staves....
wdwerker
They mentioned Stevenson and Clifton, Tenn. stave mills as suppliers, but didn't name companies.
wtnhighlander
Ahh, not the mill I was thinking of. Clifton is about an hour drive from me.
wdwerker
I did some more reading and it seems Brown Forman Corporation who owns Jack and several other brands like Southern Comfort also owns the stave mills. The price of oak barrels has risen and the supply was short at times. Some craft beer brewers age their beer in used oak casks. They get close to $200 for a used barrel !
