doorslammer
Does any one have any experience using the Lie-Nielsen A2 chisels at lower bevel angles like 25 deg? I know all the internet rhetoric says A2 is only good above 30 deg, but I'm looking for real world feedback. Ideally I would have chosen the o1 chisels to have more flexibility, but I guess they have chosen to discontinue them. I have the LN low angle block plane with an A2 blade, an sharpen this to 25 deg + 2 deg micro bevel with no issues so there seems like there's hope. 4-Square
You can go 25, but edge breakdown occurs rapidly - especially when striking... If you have the A2 set: keep the standard mortise sizes at 30d, and convert the intermediate sizes to 25d, get yourself some paring chisel handles and retrofit. Done. G S Haydon
Give it a try, you might be ok. If you want to go lower try something like the Ashley Iles Mk2. Sad to hear LN are dropping the O1.
TerryMcK
Have a look at Derek's experiments http://www.inthewoodshop.com/ToolReviews/ChiselParing.html and http://www.inthewoodshop.com/ToolReviews/ChiselBladeTesting-5Steels.html
