shuflid
I am looking for an aftermarket motor for my Powermatic 54A Jointer. I found a place that sells the powermatic brand motor for $400 but I think I can get a better deal than that if I can find an aftermarket seller. Thanks
CessnaPilotBarry
In my experience, replacing machine and spa pump motors, the best sources have always been local. I usually get a core refund for the old unit, too! Check your local business listings under "Electric Motor Repair". Here's an example of my local guy: http://www.magna-wind.com/linecard.html As a data point, several years ago I replaced a spa pump motor. The spa manufacturer's local rep wanted $400+, online it was low-$300's + shipping. The local guy had a new motor in stock for me the next day for ~ $140 + my physically broken motor. All I had to do is call from in front of the motor plate. They walked me through reading them all the data they needed, and were more than happy to quote a firm price on the phone. minorhero
First question is why do you need a new motor? Is it completely dead, or is it just making some noises? Replacing bearings in a motor is very easy and can be done by yourself with a 15 dollar tool and 10 dollars in parts. Having a motor professionally repaired if its wiring may still be significantly cheaper. That being said. You do not need to buy the "official" powermatic version. Just look at the motors tag and figure out 1) what horsepower the motor is, 2) what RPM it is, and 3) what voltage it is. Then look at the spindle on the motor and measure the diameter. So if the spindle has a 3/4" diameter you will want to know that so you can pull the pulley off and reuse it on the new motor. Then look around at some motors. Grainger will almost certainly be selling a replacement for a lot cheaper then powermatic. Ebay is a good place for used motors. Similarly a local motor place will be able to hook you up quite easily as well.
sjeff70
The 54A hasn't been around for that long has it?
wtnhighlander
Pay attention to the 'duty cycle' or 'duty rating' fieled on the nameplate as well. You don't want to replace a 'continuous duty' or 'farm duty' motor with one rated as 'intermittent duty' or some such. Continuous duty motors are designed to dissipate or tolerate the heat generated by a continuous loaded operation. Other motors may overheat and be damaged.
