wouldwurker
Thanks gang. Should I use my 1/2 sheet sander between coats? Want to get as smooth as I can since I don't have HVLP.
wdwerker
Be very careful near the edges and corners with a sander !

wdwerker
Sand through the finish color is hard to touch up . I use a 320 grit and a cork block, carefully near edges.
..Kev
I'd hand sand with a block between coats..
wouldwurker
Sanded, dust removed, and second (and last, I think) coat of oil based enamel paint applied. Time to think about poly finish. Second coat of polyacrylic added to the Xmas toy chest while I was in 'finishing mode'
wouldwurker
So close to the finish line (no pun intended). Presumably sticking with oil for the finish, as was the primer and paint. My only experience with oil based poly/wiping varnish is GF arm-r-seal & GF toymakers (i.e. seal-a-cell)...which I can do well. Not sure if it will stick to the paint surface though? Regardless, I'm not bad with that particular wipe on finish technique if there's a better suited product for this particular application. No HVLP Any recommendations for my top coat(s) and/or cure time for the paint? Thanks gang --VJ

wdwerker
Read the label on the oil paint can, then exceed the drying time for 24 hrs at least.

wouldwurker
Yep...this thing...that I started in April 2014...still in progress I was unhappy with the nap that the foam paint roller left on the table. It felt like painted drywall. Plus, you could see all the uneven areas once that glossy black paint was on. So I sanded the heck out of it with the Festool half sheet. So many high and low spots...all worked out. That half sheet really shines when you need to keep edges sharp and flat. Took the advice of someone (forgot who) and picked up some Penetrol for the oil based paint. I also applied it, per some forum advice with the 'roll and brush' method...roll on, even out with a high quality bristle brush. Night and Day. Between the penetrol and the foam and brush method, the paint went from this: To this One more coat and we should be good on the paint. wtnhighlander
Very nice surface! I must remember the Penetrol...
wdwerker
The right tools, right supplies and right technique finally came together. Penetrol lets the finish flow out, used to use it back in the day. Now I use different finishes.
wouldwurker
2 coats of oil primer, at least 9 coats of oil based paint, Penetrol, one full sanding back to the mdf after being unhappy with the stipple, one final coat...followed with cat paw prints the next morning...and its FINALLY time for finish. Shooting for 4-5 coats today. Been cured about 2 weeks, so I have no worries of the waterborne over the oil paint. Let's finish this monster.
wouldwurker
3 coats and foiled by the rain. Bought this can of finish today, and it was the first time I've ever seen big globs of cured goop in the can when I filtered it. Going back tomorrow for (hopefully) a free replacement. wouldwurker
Woodcraft gave me a new can, gratis. When the temp is like this...you can do 8 coats of waterborne in a day! Picked up a little can of gloss for a final coat or 2 on the top of the table as well. I'll brush that one on.
wouldwurker
DONE!!!!!!! Halla-freaking-lou-ya One year and two months from when I started this monstrosity. About 7 coats of GF high perf satin Sprayed 3 more coats of high gloss on the top only. So....who wants to help me move this thing upstairs?
