Popular Post Indy Cindy
A couple of weeks ago I posted a link to a Howarth video on a turned sun clock. That crystallized some ideas I had been kicking around and I just finished making this version. I haven't done a lot of spindle turning before this and I have done no spindle turning where I had to make duplicates of something much less this many. There doesn't look to be a lot to it, but I did design my petals with the help of a French curve guide to get pleasing shapes. I cut them out and did a layout with different size centers, arranged them, photographed them until I was happy with the effect. I first made the center, I like simplicity and clean lines, it has a slight dome. I used the indexing guide on my Delta midi lathe (which I did not know it even had until I did a Google search, geesh) to locate the holes for the spindles. And made an attachment to fit in my tool rest to drill centered parallel holes. I then made the spindles and used a set of spring calipers to set the dimensions. First time with this too and I purchased a cheap set just for this project which worked perfectly. I am happy that the time to make the spindles decreased to 20 minutes from 2 hours for the first one. I prefinished the parts before assembly. The finish is Deft Semi Gloss spray, de-nibbed the final coat then buffed. I made a stand to hold the spindles for spraying the finish which helped protect the tenon from the finish. I made dowels to fit into the body mortises to protect them from the finish, too. Easy peasy, just turned a long rod and cut it into lengths. I am happy to say that the final design is just what I had in mind. Overall dimensions are about 15 inches in diameter, center is 5 1/4 inches diameter, wood is maple, spindle blanks were 1 3/4 inch initially with the final diameter 1 1/2 inches.

duckkisser
I think you try your hand at doing inlay cindy, maybe inlay some sunflowers into the clock face or this shape would be a perfect shape for dyes.

Indy Cindy
Awe, thanks guys. I ran out of 'likes', did you know there is a daily limit? Dan, I do want to try some inlay and will probably start with pendants. For this piece I wanted to keep it clean and simple. Cindy
wtnhighlander
Very impressive Cindy! The design makes for a more pleasing clock than the 'sun clock' style used by Mr. Howarth. Personal opinion, of course. They are both works of art!

Byrdie
Really nicely done. For some reason I really like how the minute hand overhangs the center area. Just adds a level of detail that I like.
wouldwurker
Very pretty. Great work Cindy. You mean you weren't also inspired to film the build with stop motion?

Indy Cindy
Vinny, I can't even imagine the setup he has to take those stop action videos. I am doing well to remember to take pictures at key points along the way just so I can remember what I did. I do find that helpful, especially to snap a quick pic of the finishes I used.
