Nick2cd
This plywood was at home depot and marked as Sande ply. normally, the sande ply i see is a very blonde, almost maple-like wood. so when i saw this, i wasn't sure what kind of wood it was. anyone have any ideas about this stuff? the tag said it was a product of ecuador. Eric.
Kinda looks like sapele, though I can't say I've ever seen sapele plywood before. More likely lauan.
wdwerker
Luan , meranti and lots of other names for a whole bunch of tropical and semitropical trees used for ply like that. If carefully sanded and prepped you can finish it to a fairly convincing mahogany substitute. Practice on scraps ! It can take special care to remove unseen swirl marks that show up with the first bit of stain ! And the veneer can be very thin which will sand through in a flash !
