Shooting board and plane

I thought I'd share this here.  A couple weeks ago I decided to make a shooting board but I wanted a nice plane to match, so I made a shooting board plane too.

I set the iron at a compound angle and that made things kinda tricky when making the wedge and drilling the cross pin hole, but it all worked out.  Now the "doh!" part.  I sloped the blade the wrong way.  so when it cuts it is wanting to lift up the board instead of cutting downward and having the shooting board back up the cut.

I've considered several ways to fix this but I think the only real way is to flip the handle to the other side and use it as a left handed plane.

This is the first plane I've used a brass sole on, and I like it quite a bit.   I also put a bunch of brass plugs in the plane for ascetics and for added weight.

The plane is made from Birdseye maple, red gum, purpleheart, and brass.  The shooting board is plywood and QSWO.

Yes. I've had the idea floating around for a while. Finally decided to try it out. Can't believe I cut the angle the wrong way. Haha! That's how it goes sometimes. The iron is some old unmarked one I found laying around in the shop. Cut it at the angle with angle grinder, then ground and honed it.

Flipping the handle won't take but a few minutes I just don't want to remake the shooting board! It came out great!

That is sweet! After the LN event last week, and watching Paul Sellers' vid on making a shooting board, I'm itching to get shop time in to make one. Safe to say the plane making is beyond me at the moment. Good on you to tackle them together. I bet the combo once flip flopped will be a joy to use

Nice. Beautiful work too...aside from the snafu.

One of the important aspects to the handle on the side is to apply horizontal pressure while shooting. When I shoot I don't even use the handle, but rather grab the body with my palm pressing the edge and side down and horizontally into the board. How does this design deal with that?

What are you going to do about the plane? Make another?

You could remove the handle, turn it over, and use it left-handed on the other side of the board :)
