Dave H
I've been getting ready to build a Longworth chuck for my lathe beamer from the live chat made a bunch of them for some of the guys on live chat on his CNC so I did some research and I'm going to try and build one with my router and a home made trammel jig. The Longworth chuck will be made out of 1/2" baltic birch it will have a 2" dedicated face plate. Here is a picture of what I'll be making I got #6 1/2 bottle stoppers for project yesterday I bought the solid rubber(no hole in the middle) all the pre-drilled ones I found had 5/16" holes and I already have the hardware for 1/4-20 bolts so I had to drill a 1/4" hole perfectly centered all the way through the stoppers are tapered of course. And I needed to make a drilling jig with the taper so the stopper sits square in the jig, I decided to make the jig with a square hole instead of a round tapered hole I planed two 2' pieces of 2x6 to the the thickness of the stopper cut everything to the taper of the stopper which was about 7deg. this jig worked great there where 4 pieces to the drilling jig and, I mounted them to some scrap 1/2" ply with screws and, inlayed a square of sand paper into the plywood so the stoppers didn't spin during dilling. The saga continues waiting for the face plate so I can proceed next post in a couple days.
wdwerker
Smart set up ! Indexing the trammel cut slots should be fun.
Dave H
Still haven't got my 2" faceplate so I made my trammel jig and did a test cut in some scrap particle board. It worked great and got good cuts out of it ready for the baltic birch.
Dave H
Well it took longer than expected to get all the hardware together I routed the baltic birch 1/2" ply yesterday, sanded and fitted it with all the hardware today mounted the face plate with 1/4-20 T-nuts which worked out great once it was all together I put it on the lathe it seems to be running pretty true. The action of the chuck is smooth so here are the finished pics.
