A toy box made from walnut

It's done - just in time. (Damn iPhone camera - ever since the battery was changed the lens has dirt on it...)

I did not mount the hinges for safety reasons (the little girl is 2 years old). Instead I mortised for the hinges and installed placeholders made from aluminium. All intentional;)... 4 dowels are screwed into the lid to ensure the positioning.

It has imperfections and demonstrated my lack of experience - oh well, learning is fun to some extent;).

Thanks to all of you for the support.

Season's Greetings to all of you.

Always love how walnut just comes to life. Not sure I understand how your dowel system works. Can you expound?

Your little girl will treasure her homemade gift from dad.

Not my girl;) - my half sister's daughter and my goddaughter

The dowels are located in such a way that the lid can't slide away. They effectively index in the inside corners of the box. The lid is just placed on the box and can't slide off.

Maybe so, but your masterful grain selection trumps any flaws.  That's all I see when I look at that piece...a perfect choice for the top rail to match the curve, and the correct orientation on both the stiles.  Very well done!  A nice piece sure to be treasured by that little girl.
