wouldwurker
Dust deputy bolted in. Little gorilla glue on the flange bottom and a bead of silicon around the edges for an airtight seal.

wouldwurker
Back in the shop, breaking down the sheet goods that compose the 3 layer, sliding dog/clamp system top
wouldwurker
Added casters...not fun moving off the bench by myself, with my limited wingspan
wouldwurker
2 out of the top three layers cut and mocked up. I'm short one more half panel, and will have to pick one up tomorrow. Plenty of Baltic Birch ply, but didn't want to break out the good stuff on this You can see from the design how there's a track that the bench dog spacers slide in. .

Vyrolan
Ugh, I hate screws Ain't that the damn truth?!?! Aren't they supposed to be the easy way? =p
wouldwurker
Layers 1 and 2 of the top compete. Tougher than I thought it would be due to the uneven layers. Had to set up some spacer blocks. Upside down Top Sitting on the bench Still need to assemble the third layer of the top, and the sliding dogs. TerryMcK
Looking good Vinny. Are you going to edgeband the ply or put some thicker hardwood on it?
wtnhighlander
Ugh, I hate screws My carpenter grandpa always drove screws with a hammer. Said the slot was just for taking them out.
wouldwurker
Are you going to edgeband the ply or put some thicker hardwood on it? Eventually, yes. Right now I need this finished so I can get to work on Christmas presents. In the meantime, I'll have to suffer through looking at the ply ends
wouldwurker
Cutting more sheet goods. Added bonus, the project itself doubles as an out feed table. There's a frame between the top two layers and the bottom layer of the top.
wouldwurker
Frame complete. Did I mention that the $12.99 plans I bought from Taunton are garbage? Wayyyy too much precious shop time using the tape measure tool on the sketchup file to figure out the dimensions that they didn't bother to include in the plan. wouldwurker
Grrrrr. Remember that huge hardware shopping list from the plans? Yeah, it didn't bother to include the 3" screws I'd need to screw the frame to the top. THANKS! Annnnyway, here's where I'm at. The 4 layers that make up the top need to be screwed together yet, but we're getting closer. q

wouldwurker
Tired and calling it a night. Cut all the spacers for the clamping slots. The bench dogs are the 2 'sandwiches'. They'll slide in the slot, but can't come out once installed. Every dog and spacer will get 3/4 holes for the dowels Hoping the end product will be worth the effort and somehow better than a side vice and dog holes, like a standard benchtop. wdwerker
You are learning valuable " read between the lines " knowledge and they didnt charge extra for that ! <grin> That IVAC switch has worked well for me.
wouldwurker
Weather stripped the dust bin for an airtight seal, and gave the cyclone a test spin. Just ROS'ed the top a bit with some 320. I don't think anything made it to the vac. Bin was full of dust. Pretty cool. I can see why this big hunk of plastic costs $50.

Scott Bailey
I've been following this without comment pretty closely, I have to say that this is one of the cooler shop projects I've seen in some time. I may attempt something like this in the near future, so am really glad you're posting this journal. i've been planning on getting one of the cyclones myself and have been trying to figure out how i'm going to set it up and this mobile unit seems ideal, add in the workspace on top with clamping prowess and I have to say it seems to be about as useful a sanding station as I've ever seen. it's really fantastic work despite the difficulties in the plan, I'm quite impressed here!
