So having cleared the easel out the way i thought i would try and make the Jewellery box that Marc made for my gf for xmas.

And i thought i would run with Chets hourly update log to give me a push to get it done in time for xmas :). Everything done with hand tools again.

So here goes

Hr 1, all parts laid out and cut, scrub plane sharpened.

Hr 2, Both breadboard blanks and 1 side piece rough planed, both faces on the 2nd side planed.

You will notice i have moved my bench from the centre of the floor to the back wall. I have so much more space now, breaking down the board was so much easier. And best of all i no longer keep nutting my wood rack when I'm cross cutting :)

Time for a spot of lunch and then i have to clean the fish out. Hoping to get all the parts rough planed today so they can sit and adjust.

Hour 3 resulted in all the parts rough milled with the exception of the 2nd top. 5 mins later that was done. I also re sharpened the scrub plane and had to switch the heating on

So all parts are sitting waiting to be properly surfaced tomorrow assuming they haven't moved too much on me.

Hour 4 was spent sorting out which faces would be presentation faces, sharpened the jack plane, established reference faces on side pieces, side one cut to width.

Hour 5, side 2 trimmed to width, front and back pieces also trimmed to width. Photo is the back having the cut edge squared up.

Hour 6, broke out the skew mitre plane and shot one end of all the box frame parts. Measured and marked the other ends and cut to length.

So at the end of day two I'm almost at the point of cutting joinery :) Just need to equalise all the pieces next

And we have a completed test box. This thing is not coming apart.

This is the best face, you don't want to see the real state of it :) Hopefully thats all the mistakes out of the system now.

Hour 11 consisted of layout and getting the first mortice cut

Unfortunately while flattening the bottom i snagged the corner some what and now theres a visible cut. Hoping it will be hidden by the tenon but i can always glue a chip in there.

Hour 12 and i have 4 mortises cut and 2 tenons marked up.

I am impressed with how these have come out. All 4 are exactly the same size, line them all up and i can't feel any ridges between the boards. Hopefully the tenons will go as smoothly.

Only one tenon was loose so i have the cheek gluing up and will re cut.

There will need top be a fair bit of tweaking to get them to close up flush to the base lines but i am very impressed with how it came out fresh from the saw.
