tcarswell
Hey guys I bought this a while back I love it with the small exception that some Yahoo ground the chipbreaker up ??!! So naturally the chips get stuck all over this thing and it's a huge pain. I don't know much about the unit or how to go about ordering a replacement I've never ordered a hand tool part before. I can't believe I posted this in the shop section I'm such a newb sorry guys. Mods could you please move this to the appropriate section I apologize
wtnhighlander
You should be able to reshape the chipbreaker on a diamond plate or coarse stone. It just needs to mate with the iron along its leading edge. Failing that, I'd suggest looking at a replacement iron & chipbreaker from someone like Ron Hock. tcarswell
I'm not sure if there is enough material left to do that. Looking at the picture do you think it's possible?
wtnhighlander
Maybe not, with dressing only. I see no reason you can't put it in a vise and use a hammer to gently persuade the "hump" in the direction that presses it into the iron, then hone it to fit. It's pretty well useless now, so what can you lose?
Gilgaron
If bending it doesn't work, you can also just buy a cap iron from Lee Valley if you don't want a Hock set: http://www.leevalley.com/en/wood/page.aspx?cat=1,230,41182&p=66868 That someone resorted to grinding it in the first place may indicate this cap iron isn't worth further effort. tcarswell
Excellent great point guys . I'm just worried I want to be able to get the right one as I have no idea how to date or identify this plane really. Edit. That link I believe has the exact iron I need. While I'm there I can grab a nice blade upgrade too ! I'm all over it. I might look and see what hock is offering In this area but I think you nailed it. Thank you so much. G S Haydon
Bend it with care, it's soft metal, see how you go. I'm assuming photos were from your Australian shop .
morganew
In general I am a fan of the Ron Hock blades for the #8. I will say that no matter which modern blade you get, expect that you may have to move the frog to get the kind of set you want. New blade + new Cap iron are going to be much thicker.
