wouldwurker
......... I was raised on.....Van Morrison, It doesn't get better than Astral Weeks "you breathe in you breathe out you breathe in you breathe out you breathe in you breathe out you breathe in you breathe out you breathe in you breathe out and you're hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiggggggh"
Eric.
The problem with Rod Stewart is the crap he put out in the 1980's. But he is not alone.... most 60/70's rock stars should have sat out the 80's.... Dylan, Genesis (especially Genesis), McCartney, Robert Plant, the Stones, Jefferson Airp-Star-Plane-Ship, the list goes on. Pretty much agreed, but I love Tug of War, and Dylan had a few decent albums from the 80s on. I'll admit they're few and far between though. No, you don't have an old guy's musical taste.... you have good musical taste. But as someone who spends a lot of time in used record stores, I do wonder if they gave away Jackson Browne albums on the street corners back in the day because every $1 bin is stuffed with his records. He's just underrated because people wouldn't know good music if it slapped them upside the head. Jackson is a heavyweight. Late for the Sky and For Everyman? Couple of the best albums ever...and no one knows them. All they know is Running on Empty because of Forrest Gump.

Talk about prolific, geez.
wouldwurker
Always wondered about the recording process of Astral Weeks. I always just pictured that band free-form jamming, and Van in front of a Telefunken U47 with a book of poetry in his hand, making it up as he went along, and the band feeding off his lyrics. Tpt life
One word- eclectic. I listen to anything well written in the past 450 years. I too prefer the rock of guys who studied jazz guitar and then flipped to rock. I lose interest with the four chord wonders like the Beach Boys. Some of you would be happy in my shop one day and shooting the stereo the next.

Eric.
Beat me to it, Vinny. Exactly. Pet Sounds was a cutting edge and highly influential album. Just ask the Beatles.
wouldwurker
And it's in Mono. How cool is that. Brian Wilson didn't want it to be in stereo because he figured most people only had a mono setup at home and there would be phasing issues. wtnhighlander
Count me as way old.... I grew up listening to the big bands on the radio, and when rock made it's appearance, I was finally free! Thank you Little Richard! < sock-slide from stage left > Just take those old records off the shelf, I'll sit and listen to 'em by myself. Today's music ain't got the same soul.... I like that old-time Rock and Roll!

wouldwurker
And by the way, like anyone else I love the Beatles but, anyone who ever said the Beatles were ahead of their time in the studio never listened to Zappa and the mothers of invention. Here's a guy that didn't do drugs or drink, but lived the sex and rock 'n roll part of the old cliché. Made music for musicians.,.composed every song ...all parts, on paper...and found and hired the best musicians he could find. Hell he pulled away musicians from symphonies because the music he wrote was more challenging. And to boot, he juxtaposed the most ridiculous and funny lyrics on top of insanely complicated musical arrangements. Nothing like hearing drummer Terry Bozio change time signature 17 times in a 30 second span, during a song a bout a robot in a wet T-shirt contest. And Zappa's guitar playing ..,like no other. I've never heard another player duplicate his 'slinky' sound since. If you want to introduce yourself to Zappa pick up Joe's garage and listen to it front to back. If you only have time for one song, listen to Uncle Remus. Even I have a tough time with his more obscure stuff.
wdwerker
Watching Van Morrison live is an experience. 70 - 80% of the time he is facing the side or the band, the man has paralyzing stage fright so I was amazed he even ever managed to face the crowd. An old outdoor amphitheater with alcohol and picnic baskets allowed and some funny smelling smoke drifting around was an excellent venue to experience the show. One of those once in a lifetime experiences. That show and getting front row seats plus meeting Arlo Guthrie on his tour bus rank tops in my life so far. wtnhighlander
I'll put in a plug for Mark Knopfler, post-Dire Straits, mostly. Love his playing style, and every song he writes tells a real story. His style is more Celtic Folk than Rock & Roll these days, but I still enjoy it. And speaking of eclectic, my personal music collection contains: Mark Knopfler / Dire Straits John Denver The Carpenters Johnny Cash Bob Segar Chicago ZZ Top Air Supply AC/DC Van Halen Sammy Hagar Jim Croce Chet Atkins The Fixx Foreigner Pat Benetar Joan Jett Hall & Oats Hank Jr. Weird enough for anyone? wdwerker
I got to hear Alice's Restaurant live ! He rarely plays it anymore ! I did some work for the owners of the venue. The wife met me at the door and escorted me to the front row at the Variety Playhouse, where they do not have reserved seating ( usually first come seating ) the big surprise was at the intermission when she escorted me out to the tour bus to meet Arlo. I saw Arlo many, many years ago at the Great Southeast Music Hall but it was wicked to be front row center in a small venue.

"Next Time I'm In Town" is my favorite track. Notting Hillbillies, Missing and Presumed Having a Good Time is another interesting album. "Lord, I Feel Like Goin' Home" is an awesome smartphone alarm tone for quitting time at work.
Shane Jimerfield
that actually looks about right for someone who likes music rather than genres. it's sad when people get locked into a specific genre and miss out out on so much other good music. for some people a genre can be like a religion, or a political party. i've got all that too (except Air Supply, nothing personal just not my flavor) - not listened to some of it in quite some time though - and more - Hank III, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Rush, Calexico, Alejandro Escovedo, The Stooges, Neko Case, Social Distortion, Talking Heads, Tangle Eye, Mos Def, Robert Bradley, Rage Against the Machine.... i'll stop now.
wouldwurker
Speaking of the Carpenters...Lately I've been picking up all that am gold that radio stations in the 80's and 90's on just kind of stopped playing. Bands like: King Harvest Looking Glass Bread Ambrosia America Blues Image So many great songs that radio forgot.
wtnhighlander
WTN....Air Supply????? Teenager in the early '80s, what do you expect? Actually saw them perform at the Mud Island ampitheater in Memphis. And women were tossing undies onto the stage! Go figure. First concert I took my then gf, now wife, to see.
wouldwurker
I'd like to think that somewhere out there, there's a residual AM frequency traveling through deep space, Jupiter and the infinite beyond, finding intelligent life, and advising them that Brandy is a fine girl, and what a good wife she would be....
