ResidentEvil
My wife is a Biochemistry professor at a local college here in Nevada. One of her co-workers, a geology professor, asked me to make a sandbox for a learning tool for his class. The AR sandbox uses a projector and a Microsoft Kinect device to project a real time topographical map onto the surface of the sand. It updates in real time as the students move the sand to create hills, valleys, lakes and streams. Its actually a pretty cool deal, you can see a demonstration of how it works in this Youtube Video: The professor built the electronics part of the machine, and I donated my time to the University and built the mobile base and sandbox. The base is made from 10/4 poplar which I delivered unfinished and they painted. The box is made from Maple ply with Walnut trim. I used Spar Urethane as a finish as the sand needs to be slightly damp in order to be able to form the hills and valleys. I just finished putting some paste wax on the sandbox part tonight and will be delivering tomorrow. Here are some pics:

wtnhighlander
Can't say I've ever seen a prettier sandbox. Nice work!
Rapid Roger
That is a beautiful sandbox. Do I have to enroll in college to major in Sand Box? Can I bring my cat to class? Just joking. The technology is fantastic! Rog

Popular Post ResidentEvil
Thanks for the comments. The corner detail was actually by accident. When I was gluing on the trim strips at the corner, I overlapped them incorrectly and they didn't cover the screw holes that join the plywood sides together. So I adjusted them over a bit which left a rabbit type gap at the corner. I had some scrap maple that I cut down to long thin squares and glued it into the corners to fill the gap and provide a little bit of decoration. Started out being a goof up and ended up being a neat decorative detail.
