woodbutcher74
These are some of the Christmas gifts I have been working on this year. Once I master wood working I think I'll take a stab at my photography skills. I doubt if I'll live that long. MERRY CHRISTMAS Everyone and thanks for sharing all the knowledge and comradery this year and look forward to much more in the coming 2015.
TerryMcK
Edit your post (don't change anything) and save it again. The images will then show up properly. There is a bug in the forum software that crops up periodically.
TerryMcK
Yep can see them now. Awesome work. I like the connect 4.
woodbutcher74
I see that. I also noticed that I stole the topic title from some one and changed it. Thanks
woodbutcher74
Terry, did you notice you hit 1900 posts. No parade?
TerryMcK
Did you turn the counters for the connect 4? Looks like a great project especially with storage built into the stand. Oh yes no ticker tape parade or anything
woodbutcher74
I don't have a lathe. I got them from Lee Valley. Even if I had a lathe I don't think I would have turned them. I built four of those games and there are 56 checkers per game board. It was bad enough staining and sealing over 200 of those suckers.
..Kev
Beautiful gifts for sure! What did you use for hinges in the first box?
woodbutcher74
It has brass pins drilled through the sides and into the lid. Hinges and I don't get along.

bushwacked
Did you drill all the way through for those pins? Is the 2nd one trays of some sort? Anyways, great job on them. Wish I could do something that cool.
Eric.
Nice job Butch!
wdwerker
Nice looking work! How did I never hear for that game? Had to look it up.
wouldwurker
Cool Connect Four game! "How did you do the joinery?" "Here, diagonally!" "Pretty sneaky, sis"

Coop
As I like boxes, I'm intrigued by the first pic. Did you cut the curves in the sides with a bs and/or router? Before or after the splines?
woodbutcher74
The box started out as a regular box made out of 1 1/4" (5/4 for you lumber freaks)cherry. I then cut in the splines and then cut the curves in the box on my bandsaw. I found the board at my local sawmill and thought it was cool and decided to turn it into a gift for my wife. I wish I would have found a more highly figured piece of maple for the top but got rushed by the Holiday.

FWIW : I personally think the lid being more simple does the box more justice than if it were "highly figured". The cherry has nice tasty grain and an over-done lid would have taken away from that. Coop
I would probably have run the grain horizontally and it wouldn't have looked nearly as good. I like it!
wouldwurker
Coop, since you like boxes, I highly recommend this book for inspirado. If you're already cut your teeth on a few boxes in the past, the design elements are pretty easy to reverse engineer. Very cool coffee table book. I keep mine in my office. Like that curved design by the way...I'm making 8 or so for Xmas, and one of my boards in pretty thick. Might be the one I try this on. Great work
Eric.
I have that boxes book. Also have cabinets and tables from the same series. All three are packed with inspiration. Great for overcoming designer's block...which is usually my biggest woodworking challenge, being the non-artistic type. Sucks for me.
Coop
Thanks Vinn. I have a couple by Doug Stowe that got me started. I will order this as my Christmas present to myself!Ordered all three and got free shipping. I'm like you Eric, I need all the inspiration I can get! wouldwurker
I love that idea on the cover, with the untrimmed mitre keys supporting little legs. Going to try it out in a few days.
Mzdadoc
I love connect 4 and so do my kids! Is this design of your own creation? I would love detailed info on how it's made.
