tcarswell
I have the opportunity to buy a new general international tilt top 75-050t or a standard non tilting 75 040. I've gotten into chair building a fair amount is it worth it would you say to pay the extra 200 for the tilt top version ?
wdwerker
Chairs have angles so if your going the HCM route the tilt does make some sense. But couldn't you make an angled cradle to hold the board at the right position? Might be faster to swap set ups that way, avoid having to re square it to go to the next set of mortices. tcarswell
Thanks for the fast response. I thought of that out of all the shops I've been in few had tilt heads. I'll go with the standard model and I'll have enough money left over to get a 3 horse Triton router. Thanks man.
Boatworks Today
Don't know what the unit costs that you're looking at, but pm makes a tilting Mortiser (719t). I have this and love it :-). Check cpopowermatic for prices..
dwacker
For chairs I would definitely go with a horizontal mortiser.
tcarswell
Well I'm back to say I should have listened ( you saw this coming ) I returned the general international 75-040 and got a beefier tilting 75 050t
minorhero
What did you not like about the standard model?
tcarswell
What did you not like about the standard model? I should have mentioned that. Basically I made a few angle base jigs and looked up plans and I didn't want to constantly make sleds for the different angles I will need for my chair making . Basically what particle board said.i absolutely could have made it work but I wanted it to be convenient and "the last mortiser I'll ever buy" Unfortunately I couldn't afford the pm that boat works mentioned.
