Coop
Does anyone know what the little black thing that fits around some electronics cords nowadays is for. Some will slide on the cord and others will not
davewyo
Forgive my technical terminology, but I think what you are referring to is armor for the little electronic deally-bob which sets off security scanners, so one won't carry it out of the store, etc. Edit: Inside of the plastic cigar-shaped thingy is an electronic what-not which is unrelated to your tool. You can bust it off with a "channel-lok" pliers but don't damage the cord. Oh...I should say that if I misunderstand the thing you're thinking about, then you should ignore my advise
Coop
So it's not something that protects the circuitry of the machine? It's like the tag on your mattress, you can take it off when you get it home?
AstroDave
Are you talking about a "noise" filter that wraps around the cord? For example...http://www.amazon.com/Black-UF50B-Noise-Ferrite-Filter/dp/B00MJVN1E0/ref=sr_1_12?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1422245469&sr=1-12&keywords=noise+filters In general these just filter electromagnetic/radio frequency interference depending on type. davewyo
yes, but don't do anything drastic til I confirm what you're talking about I'm looking around for one of those things on one of my power cords, so I can take a photo

wtnhighlander
Coop, I think what you are referring to are the ferrite "beads" or "donuts" that are intended to provide some level of electromagnetic shielding for the signals on the cable. I see them most often on VGA monitor cables, or the DVI monitor cables that also carry the VGA signal. Haven't noticed the beads in use on purely digital video cables like HDMI.
davewyo
No, I'm I'm not talking about the ferrite "noise suppressor". It's a black plastic capsule that holds an RFID security chip onto a power cord. I guess I don't have an example (apparently I have removed all of them from my tools), so ignore my advise Ken D
wtnhighlander
I understand what you are talking about, Dave. I just assumed Ken meant the ferrite beads, since he indicated some move on the cord and some don't. Could just as well be the RFID tag. davewyo
Thanks Ross. It may be a combination of the two we're talking about. That's why I'm desperately trying to retract my advise. I don't think it would be good to remove the ferrite insulator, but I routinely remove the RFID things.
Tom Cancelleri
+1 to noise suppressor. However on some tools it's got a sensor tag in it to set off store alarms if you try to steal it.
davewyo
Here is the thing I was referring to: http://www.practicalmachinist.com/vb/attachments/f38/14990d1251208879-plastic-thing-makita-tools-img00199.jpg (not my photo)
Cochese
Ferrite.
wdwerker
The noise suppressors I have seen were molded on. That picture looks like an RFID snap on case. If it doesn't slide on the cord be cautious.
Coop
I think I've been looking at two different things that look similar. The one on my Bosch router is made by Emtag and says do not remove and slides along the cord. I have a monitor at the office that doesn't slide but looks about the same. I bet the one on the router is for security and the one on the monitor is the one for noise suppressor. I'll leave them alone as they're not bothering anything or in the way. Was just curious? wtnhighlander
The surface of that device looks like a raw ferrite bead, but I've never seen one shaped like that on the ends.

Coop
I did and will post it tomorrow from my office. Haven't figured out yet how to with this iPad as I don't get my email to it
Coop
The first 2 pics is the router cord and it slides on the cord. The 3rd is on my monitor and it doesn't move.
AstroDave
So out of curiosity (dangerous I know) I did a bit more searching... http://www.contractortalk.com/f5/what-plastic-slidey-thing-my-saws-power-cord-89135/index2/ Based on the above thread the research done there I believe these to be two different items... not surprisingly the monitor cable has a noise suppressor due to the requirement of its more sensitive electronics. The power tool has a theft prevention device. If the item on your cord has a patent number on it that is a good way of checking. That is what someone on the thread above did... Coop
Thanks Dave. I agree with you after reading what others, like yourself, with more knowledge of these things have said. These two look alike but have different functions. I was afraid to remove the one on the router for fear that red dye would spew out!
