Popular Post Andrew Schicho
Hello all this is my first post in the forums so bear with me while I make many, many, mistakes both grammatical and otherwise. I thought I'd share my first ever woodworking project which I completed about a year ago as a memorial to my grandfather. He passed a few years ago in September and one thing I always remembered was his small basement shop where he did a variety of home projects and some woodworking. I was always fascinated with his (extremely messy) little man cave and when he passed I helped my grandmother clean it out so she could sell the house. Somewhere in that mess I found a few old photos he had kept of every project he had done and it inspired me to make something in his honor. At the funeral my grandmother was presented with a flag to commend my grandfathers service in the Navy as an engineer on PB4Y-1 antisubmarine planes. I decided right then that I would make the triangular display case for the flag and along the way it blossomed into this project. Forgive the pictures they are horrible I know but they were taken with a cell phone with only myself in mind and I never really considered I'd be showing them anywhere. The table is solid mahogany with a custom glass insert and navy blue velvet staging area. I have no clue why I picked mahogany, maybe I liked the color, it was my first project and I knew next to nothing about wood or woodworking so even finding the local woodcraft was a struggle. The legs are 1/8th scale replicas of the actual PB4Y-1 propellers, I left out the twist because I didn't have a clue how to do that at the time anyway and I was doing this project with a few limited tools I bought second hand off craigslist on my back porch. They are all round so I doweled them into the bottom of the tables face and reinforced them with a small right angle not visible from the outside and some screws. The final touch was borrowing my college laser to engrave the front face of the table with his name and the time he spent with us. Yes I am in the photo, no I do not have a clue what face I am making. Anyway I'm finally getting around to sharing this because the project really got me into wood working and I will soon be building a garage to put a small shop into so I can support my addiction somewhere other than a 6' by 20' covered porch!
