installing vise into solid block

I've done some re organizing in my garage and pulled my 55"x23 tool cabinet over into my working space along a wall. I'm planning to laminate a bunch of nice 2x4's together to make a solid (3.25ish ") top for a working surface.

I would like to add a face vise to the block since my small bench doesn't have one but under mounting isn't really an option since it will sit flat on the tool box. Im considering routing out a rebate on the under side of the block for the hardware and posts. I'll attach the vise body with machine screws counter sunk into the top with nuts on the bottom. Anybody see a problem with that idea? I've never installed a vise before.

Something like this:

only let into a recess on the bottom of the slab? If so, you can get away with lag screws from the bottom to hold the vise on. All the clamping force is between the jaws, and doesn't affect the fasteners holding the vise to the table.

Yes and no. . I'll be mounting the commercial vice, that I ordered from woodcraft pretty much inside the block. After thinking it through a bit, I really can't think of a reason it wouldn't work. Like you said, the force is really between the jaws. Taking out about 1.5 sqft by 2.5" deep won't be a huge amount of fun but it should definitely be sturdy.
