jmaichel
I am moving soon and I need to dispose of a bunch of finish. I know that I can just harden the latex/waterbased finish and throw them out. I am more concerned with Mineral Spirits, BLO, Shellac and a few oil based finishes. Boatworks Today
Depending on how much you have, you can pour it over cardboard and let dry. Once cured it's safe to throw away.
Arminius
Shellac is basically a non-issue, it is completely organic and degrades, the alcohol evaporates. You just don't want a large coating of it on pipes or the like.
Dave H
In OLympia at the dump they have what they call the Hazo-House where you can drop off things like insecticides, paint, old gas, solvents and, anything that shouldn't go in the land fill it doesn't cost anything and is properly disposed of. Call your local garbage transfer location.
davewyo
Try the local recycle center; sometimes they collect it. You can also pour it into kitty litter and throw it away when it hardens.

wdwerker
I had a client who used to work for the EPA. Now he advises companies on EPA issues. He told me to spray or pour old finishes on scrap cardboard and let it dry, then toss the cardboard. Let solvents evaporate. Toss the open can w residue. He said with any solvent & finish purchase comes the implied licence to release it into the atmosphere. But giving them away to be used is much better !
