jtcherk
Hey fellow woodworkers, I need a little help please. I recently stripped my fir stairs and applied some clear fir board and batten paneling up the sides and landing. So far I am very happy with outcome, but now the hard part... What would be the best product and application method of a "clear coat" over the stained fir board and batten and the stairs themselves? I have used polyurethane in the past on many projects and was never truly happy with the end result. I also found it a little difficult to apply on vertical surfaces as it tended to run slightly. Oils, varnishes, wipe-ons, varnish/oil blends, hard wax oil, poly, etc etc? Any recommendations? I value each and every opinion that comes from "trial by error" method. Thanks, Jaret ADDED FEB 27-15. I tried to add a picture, but it would not work. If you tell me how I will attempt again. Yes, in Addition to the wall panels, the stair treads, risers etc. Thanks so far. Stobes21
I'd use arm r seal. It's simple to apply, won't run (since you wipe off the excess), and is quite durable. Just make sure you have some ventilation while it cures. It isn't too stinky to my nose, but indoors it might be too much for some.
wtnhighlander
When you say 'the stairs themselves', are you talking about the stair treads? If so, I suggest stepping up to a commercial floor finish. No matter how well Arm-R-Seal works on furniture, it is just not designed for walking surfaces, and would wear quickly in such a situation.
jtcherk
Hi I added some pictures. Please keep in mind the pic's were taken during the staining and construction phase. (It actually looks very nice now). Thanks, Jaret
