PlaneAndDestroy
Hey all! I'm in the midst of building a modern rocker in black walnut. My stock for the side assemblies ended up at 1 3/4" once it was all milled down. I started out by drawing on one of the sheets of plywood hanging about in my shop. Basically I laid out the pertinent dimensions and drew some lines. I thought I had something I liked, and it looked great looking at it sideways on the bench, but that was because it was foreshortened by the angle. When looked at from the side on I didn't quite like it, so I did a redraw with a few adjustments. Once I liked the profile I rolled out some craft paper and did the drawing in fine pencil. I cut out the parts, adhered the paper to some 1/2" mdf and cut out the templates on the bandsaw. A little refining on the oscillating belt sander (the only ridgid tool I've found to be acceptable) and I was ready to destroy some wood... I used a couple squares of turners tape to stick the templates to the rough cut stock, routed half of it with a 3/4" pattern bit, and finished it off with a 1/2" laminate trim bit. A little bit of chiseling and some fine sanding with a hard block and the joints faces look to be fitting together nicely. I don't have a domino (anyone in Vancouver wanna go halfsies? ) so I'll be routing out mortises on both parts and making some loose tenons. If the mortise pal was still around I'd love to pick up one of those, but for now I'll just make some mdf jigs to give me some 3/4 tenons. Any thoughts on the tenon size? I haven't decided what I'm going to do with the seat and the back... I might do something upholstered, I might make a sort of half lap grid work with the typical seat plate shape scooped out of it... We'll see... And here's a pic of the parts sitting up. The rocker radius is 38", I'll see if that works ok...I'll probably leave the runners loose and give 'er a try before gluing them in for good. Let me know what you think, and any tips/critiques are solicited and appreciated!
wtnhighlander
Interesting design, for sure. Not having built chairs of any kind, I may be speaking out of turn, but the joint between the back, seat, and rear leg concerns me a bit. Will i be strong enough? PlaneAndDestroy
Well, in order to fail downwards it would have to spread all the other joints, so I think it should be. I'll see eventually, i guess! In addition I think the seat plate will be mortised through both pieces, so it would have to bust that up, too. wtnhighlander
Yeah hard for me to visualize from the side pieces alone. Looking forward to seeing the rest!
