Yet another wood ID thread

Walnut smells like a stable to me, but my sense of smell is pretty weak. Anyway, here is a better photo of the end grain slice, sanded to 120, dry, and wiped with mineral spirits:

No idea about the smell. The dust just makes my nose itch, like most other woods do.

Still open for opinions, but I'm ready to claim it as old cherry, and get on with life. This is the only piece of it in my posession, so it will likely be used for accents on other projects.

I agree Eric. Walnut smells like woodworking to me. When I was a kid, 30+ years ago, walnut was one of the first woods that I worked with. The smell of it just brings me back... and tells me that it's walnut. Sorry, can't tell you what you've got.
