davewyo
My wife said "If you have great color and grain, you don't need to contour the box sides." So on this one we're going for square and linear. I mitered some box sides out of some Chechen that I got from Bell Forest. Cut a groove for the bottom and made the cuts for the lid. http:// Then I used some tape to glue a few little bits back on. http:// Chechen is hard wood, but it is still splinters at times. Cut a bottom and sanded the insides prior to glue-up. http://
davewyo
Glued it together. http:// And started on the lid. http:// So that's where we stand. Next is inlay with little strips of the scrap Chechen and figuring out how the hinges will work on the mock-up poplar box that I've been building along the way. I'm going to use a 1/8" dia. brass rod for hinges...maybe. http:// The lines on the lid have been deselected, so there will be something slightly different. http://
wtnhighlander
Very interesting wood! Looking forward to the rest of the journal.
Coop
That stuff rocks. Never heard of it. Is the bottom the same wood?
davewyo
The bottom is from some wood I scavenged a while back and posted up as a "Help identifying this wood" thread. It is more than likely Elm.

Eric.
Pronounced shay-shayne. My dealer calls it Carribean Rosewood to make people think it's more special than it is. It's cool stuff but it ain't no rosewood. Looking good, Dave.

It's cool stuff but it ain't no rosewood. Looking good, Dave. Thanks for that Eric. I was pronouncing it like the country =Chechen Republic. I see where it is also called Black Poison Wood for the sap which acts like Poison Ivy. To me that doesn't sound as sexy as Caribbean Rosewood, but it does sound more dangerous. davewyo
Today I put in some keys http:// and routed some groves into the lid. http://
wtnhighlander
Cool, I like the light colored keys! Looks really nice in contrast with the primary wood grain.

wtnhighlander
Simple as it is, the inlay on top adds a really nice flair to the box. Good choice of design!
Coop
Simple and elegant. Great looking box Dave. I want some of that wood!
Popular Post davewyo
Thanks gang! I've been trying to make a few boxes for a couple of weddings I have coming up this year. The idea is to send a box before the "big day" so that the happy couple can use the box as a receptacle to collect gift cards on the gift table...or not, whatever they decide. The first box (which-ever is selected) is due by the second week of June. It's for my son-in-law and his lovely bride(to be). [This may be out of line. Moderators go ahead and ding me with the warning and delete if necessary] He went "over the berm" in Kuwait back in 02 and since then has taken advantage of the GI bill and is working as an engineer, designing body armor (and other unmentionable items) for our troops. We couldn't be more proud. This young man deserves the best that I (and our nation) can do. I hope I can make a gift box that is suitable. Coop
Dave, thank your son-in-law for his service for me. No reason in the world to yank that comment. The box is a great idea. Congrats to the lucky couple!

davewyo
Today I added this "knob" thingie: http:// I want some of that wood! It's fairly pricy stuff Coop. I got a board that was 3/4" x 5 1/6" x 37 3/16" which works out to right around 1 BF @ $24.98. I am pretty happy to have just a small bit of waste from that board. http://
bushwacked
I am late to the party but wow this looks great!!
davewyo
So I put in some brass hinges rather than the brass rod type hinge. I experimented with the brass rod style and I didn't love the reveal on the back of the box. It amounts to a rule joint and leaves a large gap. So... ">http:// ">http:// Then a bunch of sanding, and I set up for finishing. I tried several finishes and Boiled Linseed Oil looked the best as far as I could see.
