Pulled this piece of flame birch out of my lumber rack

It'll be a walnut and birch box, about 16" by 7". Using a dovetail jig (unless things go horribly wrong...then it'll be mitred and key'ed.

It will hold these two removable coffee ground receptacles.

A Forstner bit, a little bit of routing, a LOT of chisel work, and way too much card scraping...and it's not even that cool.

All because I didn't account for the fact that the metal box was tapered and had a bulge on both sides.

I could've made five more boxes in the time it took me to come up with a solution and execute it. :0

Actually no...not magnetic at all.
I'll drill it out a little In the middle and flush a walnut miller dowel end in there.
Sanded the inside last night. Between my jointer, planer, and hand planes, I got some crazy tearout in the figured birch. Divots here and there that can't really be sanded out.
Any ideas on how to best improve would be appreciated...my solution now is to just leave it alone.

EDIT: Found my answer - Leave it alone, buy that supermax drum sander, and use it NEXT TIME.

Decided on no bottom given all the wet stuff and cleaning issues.

Added a middle brace - little bit of extra measuring to get it seated on that rabbet and still have the dominos aligned.

Just needs a little handle of sorts for the top. Thinking a drawer pull maybe?

Glue up, sand, and it's finishing time.

EDIT: Screw the handle.

I will never again covet a beautiful board to collect dust on my lumber rack.

I'm sorry I cheated on you, Arm R Seal...it feels so good to have you back in my arms again. That Watco was a one night stand the other day...she didn't mean anything to me baby! Take me back.

Just the first coat. Love me some ARS
