N00b-in-training
I've been commissioned, by my wife, to build a few picture frames. She wants them to be aged to look like used whiskey barrels. Anyone have experience finishing white oak to look like it's been sitting in barrel warehouse of 7 years? I know I won't be able to get the inconsistency of a truly aged barrels but I'm hopeful someone has played around with enough dyes to get it pretty close. Janello
Something to try on a test board. Wave a propane torch flame over it then apply a black die, wipe it off across the grain while it's still wet then use a real light brown gel stain. Should be interesting to see what you come up with. N00b-in-training
Good thought! I plan to lightly hit the face with a hand plane and the flame and black dye will probably hit the rough spots well. Tpt life
If you peroxide soak it, you can sometimes get a gray tone. I don't think it looks right on raw wood but could look ok if you can get some tone depth first.

Brendon_t
BBQ / Smoker That's what I was thinking.
N00b-in-training
BBQ / Smoker Hmm... I have a smoker (my other sanity checker before woodworking) and the pieces would fit. Maybe it'll turn out great and my wife will want a larger piece, then I'll have to buy a bigger smoker. Could be a HUGE win!

Or it could go badly and you just throw on a steak either way its a win.
