Walnut Find -Remembered 2

Here are some photos of the latest find from my stack in the barn. As soon as the yard dries out some - if it ever does - I'll bring in some more of this beautiful wood to work up.

This is air dried walnut that might have seen a kiln. I just can't remember if the man I bought it from had it kiln dried.

My hardwood supplier can't hardly get walnut these days. And what he can get looks a lot like cow doo doo...

I can only get good walnut from two smaller family owned mills.   Not enough trees and dark wood and natural finishes are back in style so there is stress on the commercial supply chain.

Walnut in California is drying up a bit. Ofcourse right before I buy a truck load to do the maloof rocker. I was gonna pay 10.55$ a bd ft for FAS 8/4 black walnut. luckily a friend told me about a local shop that was purchased on foreclosure I believe. The new owner was selling tons of tools and some "construction lumber " i went just to see the tools construction lumber doesnt excite me. Well when I got there he had teak (just a little bit ) black walnut genuine mahogany maple cherry and jatoba. I ended up getting (in two trips on separate days he's a block away from my sheet metal shop ) 90 bd ft of 8/4 nearly flawless black walnut 29 bd ft of 4/4 jatoba and 50 bd ft of mixed figured woods and 8/4 cherry and maple for 260 cash I'm real happy with the price as every boards is nearly defect free. The only knot that's bigger than a pinhead is the one you see on the 8/4 13" by 11 foot piece of walnut standing up in my shop . The other big board is 4/4 jatoba same dimensions almost exactly.

PS Sorry for the rant I was so happy to save so much I'm gonna get a jet midi lathe soon

Thanks. Funny you mention that. I had just cut 47 inches off that purpleheart board. It was a score indeed. I posted after my first run but I really did well on the second run too. Can you imagine someone using that for construction lumber haha
