Christopher Ison
Hey guys I am looking at a Rockwell wood lathe not sure model number. But here are pic of the lathe. They are asking $800. Is that a good price. This will be my first lathe so I don't know much about it. Thanks all for the help. Happy cutting!!
wdwerker
Seems high to me. That's a pretty old lathe, but it looks like it's in good condition.

Christopher Ison
What's a good price for it Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
wdwerker
Considering parts are almost impossible to get I wouldnt pay more than $
atlinwi202
I would say 500 is fair. Looks clean for that price.
atlinwi202
Maybe $
Christopher Ison
How do I go about getting parts? Where should I look? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
atlinwi202
What parts do you need? If it is a reeves variable speed drive I would scrap all that and put in a vfd. Then the parts are only bearings and belts- problem solved.
wdwerker
The new owner of Delta scrapped decades worth of parts so they didn't have to service the existing machines. So basically we are screwed.
weithman5
After watching what Rob Horton did with his little harbor freight lathe, i would be hard pressed to spend that much money on an old machine without a specific reason
duckkisser
After watching what Rob Horton did with his little harbor freight lathe, i would be hard pressed to spend that much money on an old machine without a specific reason rob realy pushed the boundaries and if he did alot of big work like that with that unstable of weight he could damage the shaft, bearing, and rip the belt. bigger machines are designed to hold bigger work. not saying it cant be done but you increase the risk. Christopher Ison
What did he do? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Rick A McQuay
Solid old machine. What you thought was the model number is the serial number and "ES" tells me this was made in 1971. Not sure of the model number as Rockwell Delta had several that looked similar, a 46-201 maybe. Unless you drop it off a truck or beat it with a sledge, the only things you need to worry about are the consumables (belts/bearings, which are on the shelf). Lot of these floating around out there and parts shouldn't be an issue for decades to come. I don't see a lever for a Reeves so no variable speed, that drops the value a good bit. Watch your pennies or your spending will stray into new lathe territory. Also, many or most of these were 3 phase so check on that.
Christopher Ison
Thanks. The guys isn't gonna come off 800 cause that's what he said he bought it for. Being fresh in turning I have made a make shift lathe to turn a little and got addicted. I could probably build one but I think I want to just get one and learn more only thing I turned was a handle its not beautiful by any means but it sure gave me the itch for more. Plus I keep watching videos of people turning bowls I want to do that bad lol. Since I might not be going with that one cause he won't come down any. What's a good lathe to get to learn with and be able to turn bowls and stuff? I saw the central machinery lathe and to be honest that the only lathe I have ever seen in person. Other than my make shift one. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Christopher Ison
My make shift lathe I took a 2x4 piece and a 1x4 piece I had screwed together and made a tool rest not shown. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Rick A McQuay
He probably bought it then realized it was 3 phase. $800 is too much for a 4 speed lathe, too many of them out there. Most likely he'll sit it on it for awhile then take less. Best midi lathe available http://nashville.craigslist.org/tls/4986434493.html Don't buy anything that looks like this: http://westky.craigslist.org/tls/4974945277.html or this: http://nashville.craigslist.org/tls/4913748556.html This guy has a Delta I don't recognize, no price http://nashville.craigslist.org/tls/4989916187.html Grizzly lathe, $700, don't know anything about that model http://shoals.craigslist.org/tls/4930186669.html
Christopher Ison
Thank you McQ! from your Craigslist search area your pretty close to my area. I saw a delta 1440 and asking $450 any info on that one? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Rick A McQuay
Lot of reviews online about the 1440, seems to have been a problematic lathe for some people.
