I am not sure exactly what it's original purpose was, but it looks ideal for setting blades on a jointer.  Increments are to .001" and the dials turn to zero it out when the 4 feet are on the table.  Not sure what the screw on top does, there is a spring under it and I didn't go any further.  I got it at a junk shop for $10 CDN.

Any clues what the original use was?
