BRLA2RV
Now that we have finished sanding with 320 grit sanding sponge, we would like a matt finish but don't want to add color! We saw the Sam Maloof finish is one of the best. Do we sand between applications? Our burl is "live edge" as we have heard it called ( not sanded, left rough ). Do we apply the finish on the edge? Oh, we burned the edge then brushed! All advice encouraged!
wdwerker
Finish all sides and edges. A water based finish will change the color the least. Laquer is also pretty clear. Varnish and oil finishes will add an amber tone to the wood. You can buy finishes in Gloss, Satin and Dull sheens, might have to find a better supplier that stocks all 3. You can also let the finish cure for a few days and rub it with a red or gray abrasive pad ( like ScotchBrite ) to reduce the sheen.
BRLA2RV
Thanks for the advice. Guessing the Sam Maloof is not what we are looking for? Because of the oil in the finish? Can you recommend a particular brand of "clear, satin" finish?
wdwerker
I spray most of my work with a water bourne finish. Lots of the guys on the Forum use Arm r Seal by General finishes. Oil will darken your wood and it takes longer times to dry.
