Immortan D
I'm basing my design on those arches found on many Japanese gardens, especially this one:
Immortan D
Started with the basic construction of the frame with half lap joints: Every cut was made on my bandsaw: Then routed some dadoes and fitted a checkerboard square-holed panel:

Eric.
Yes! I love this project. As a fan and owner of (the beginnings of) a Japanese garden, this is right up my alley. Can't wait to see what you come up with. I'm currently obsessed with my landscaping and in-ground plantings, but there will come a day when I'll run out of dirt and will have to turn to pots. Wooden planters will be all over the place eventually.

Immortan D
Using dowels and counter bored screws from behind, I installed support braces for a yet-to-be-designed bottom shelf. Glued the frame and spray painted red. Using the roof support piece for clamping, I bent thin pieces of pine laminated together for the rustic "roof". Then stained it black and cut to size at the bandsaw. I glued the roof to the top piece. For support and reinforcement I used flat head screws, which won't be seen

Immortan D
Is it me or are the pictures not showing? I edited the post and uploaded the images to the Forum and placed thumbnails. For the original images I used postimage.org, that must be the reason you're not seeing them.

davewyo
I digging this project journal. Keep the updates coming. I'm in the planning stage of a planter box right now and perhaps I'll have to "find inspiration" from your design.
Immortan D
Thanks all for your comments. This is the wall where the planter is gonna live, replacing that small pot hanging from a butcher's hook.:
Popular Post Immortan D
Made a couple of holes on the wall, placed fischers, then installed the planter with long counter bored screws: A view of the planter in place: Then built some pot holders for the small pots, stained and finished them using waterproof varnish: So far so good: Made the terrible mistake of painting that thing yellow... will fix that.

Eric.
That's awesome Daniel. Probably would have kept mine raw wood but it's a sweet design. I may be stealing that in the future!
