bushwacked
I am about to apply finish on the below. How can I neatly apply and not look like a 2 year old went wild with it? I have ARS oil base and endurovar water base finishes at my disposal. Brush or rag or foam brush? Spraying is not an option so please don't recommend it. I know that would be perfect for this but I don't have one and no one close has one either.
Boatworks Today
Sorry, but I gotta recommend spraying ! I know, I know... But some food for thought (and might be worth the experiment). Most auto stores carry what's called a Prevail (basically a self contained sprayer). Certainly not the best quality (actually kinda sucks), but for the sake of getting the ARS applied and wiping up the excess it may save a ton of time! ARS is thin enough that it may actually work fairly well.. Here's what I;m referring to
Tpt life
Yeah, I would actually consider taping the top and rattle can spray the holes. Then go back and ARS the top. Just a a thought to try.
bushwacked
Would something like this work for the holes? ... Possible everything? Or just holes then brush the rest?
wdwerker
Yes if applied carefully. Get it on too heavy and it runs ! Light coats !
..Kev
A lot of people like Deft.. I've had decent luck with it as well.. Spray in a very well ventilated area tho.
bushwacked
Picked it up tonight and got some test pieces to test with. Going for 4-5 light coats and see what it looks like
Stobes21
Holes like that are part end grain and part long grain in varying proportions as you go around the circle. So they will absorb finish to a different degree as you go around the hole with any sort of brushed or ragged on finish. This leads to an uneven appearance. If those are holes for something like candles then it won't matter. But if it will be prominently seen then it may be an issue. Hopefully the rattle can poly does the trick. bushwacked
How long in between sprays should I wait? The can says wait no longer than 2 hours or you're supposed to wait 72 hours and sand then start spraying again. I was thinking probably 20-30 mins between coats at 85-90 degrees outside
wdwerker
I would wait about 45 min to an hour. You can spritz just the end grain sides of the hole more often to seal them up.
AceHoleInOne
Is something going in the holes and is a tight fit? Careful not to get to heavy the finish will build up around the edges of the holes and whatever wont fit in the holes. May be better to wipe the finish and control the application. -Ace-
