French Cleated Kids Desk

I've been struggling with building my son a desk, as the darn kid keeps getting bigger. I just can't settle on a height.

I found this plan in Woodsmith, which they refer to as a 'Workstation'.

That's it on the right with the yellow drill on top.

Figure, it's good for the kid because

A. I can move it up and down the wall

B. His legs won't bump any legs underneath.

Plus, I had some extra sheets of BBP lying around.

Drawer carcass domino'ed...need to pick up some 1/4 for the bottom.

Darn metric BBP.. Can't get my shoulder plane in there!

Read a few articles in FWW on drawer stops, and made a few changes. Stuff like this is good me to cut me teeth on new techniques.

Added a notch in the back on the drawer for a 90 degree turnbutton. Also replaced the ply runners with hardwood and left a tiny gap on the middle guide runners, so there's no contact on the middle guide.

Added very thin kickers to the top as well.

Will replace the middle guides and runners with hardwood in the morning as well.

As I took that photo I realized that it would have been way easier to just have the top of the desk on a hinge!

False front glued and screwed. Resaw'ed a piece of that nice flame birch.

Plugged all my countersunk screw holes with 3/8 dowel stock.

Found its 1000 times easier to dunk the long dowel in glue, hammer it in, flush it from the whole stick, and move on to the next hole...in lieu of cutting a bunch of small plugs.

Those long vertical supports on each side present some initial challenges if French cleated. If you think about it, a French cleat brings the desk 3/4" away from the wall. You'd also need to add strips to the 'legs' or strips on the wall (or set the legs back 3/4" when building it).

The project is from a 'slat wall system'. Essentially a wall is constructed with the cleats inset. As such, this particular design would have been flush to the 'slat wall'.

I think I'll just wind up screwing it directly into two studs. The cleat would have been attached the same way anyway. My small Bosch drill should be able to fit through the inside with the drawer removed. Since the back is doubled up ply, it should be plenty strong.
